Project Introduction
The Firebaugh Community Connectivity and Downtown Revitalization Study seeks to improve the existing bicycle and pedestrian network to better link residents and visitors to key destinations, promote increased walking and bicycling and create a strategy for revitalizing downtown Firebaugh through commercial and residential development opportunities.
While the City’s population has been steadily increasing in the past two decades, economic activity in its downtown has declined as a result of lack of visibility and poor connections to Highway 33 and within the City. The study will identify projects to better connect the downtown to Highway 33 and draw more visitors to the downtown core and the San Joaquin River. The project will also identify priority areas for safer travel by walking, bicycling, and driving.
This study will engage community members to identify high-priority projects, develop conceptual designs, and better position the City to start implementing projects either through its capital improvement program or by applying for State and Federal grant funds.
Existing Conditions Report
The Existing Conditions Analysis provides a foundational understanding of the current state of downtown Firebaugh as part of the broader revitalization study. This report examines key aspects of the city's built environment, market conditions, mobility infrastructure, and land use regulations to identify challenges and opportunities that will shape future planning efforts.
By analyzing demographic trends, economic factors, and the physical character of the downtown core, the report establishes a baseline for informed decision-making and strategic interventions. The findings highlight existing assets such as Firebaugh’s historic downtown grid, strong community institutions, and regional connectivity, while also addressing critical issues such as vacant lots, fragmented land ownership, and infrastructure gaps.
This analysis served as a critical first step in developing strategies to enhance downtown Firebaugh’s economic vitality, livability, and overall connectivity, guiding the city toward a more vibrant and resilient future.
This project is funded through a Caltrans Sustainable Communities Planning Grant. The Firebaugh Community Connectivity and Downtown Revitalization Study is being developed in partnership among the City of Firebaugh, CivicWell, and Opticos Design.
